Acorns (Fallen) 2009-2010 (click thumbnail for larger image)
The Acorn paintings grew out of the Genesis paintings. While the Genesis works attempt to allow chance to be visible, the Acorns are purposeful compositions, made by spraying paint over an arranged group of objects, making the negative of the physical object visible. The resulting images are deliberate and clear compositions in opposition to the hazy, soft space they exist in.
Genesis 2005-2008 (click thumbnail for larger image)
The Genesis series began as an attempt to make a chance moment visible – a passing shadow, a bolt of thunder. I spray paint over a random accumulation of found natural materials (dirt, rocks, pebbles, tracked mud and etc.) to make permanent a momentary event. The result, the negative image of the physical objects or debris, is a surprise, discovered only when I lift the canvas.
Whisper 2006 (click thumbnail for larger image)
The Whisper series arose by combining webs I had been weaving and spray paint drawings I had been making with found natural materials. The drawings used a web, over which I sprayed paint, to create a shadow-like image.
